Career path case study 1

Matt Baker, Head of Product Design & Development, JLT EB

I started at JLT in 2003 as a Flexible Benefits Administrator in a small Flex team in Manchester. I had spent the previous 3 years running a flex scheme in-house at a national optical retailer. JLT had just started to offer Flexible Benefits to clients and it seemed an exciting opportunity.

As we won more clients I started to get involved in client configuration of our 3rd party platform and setting up the benefits online. In 2005 I was promoted to Project Manager where I ran implementation and renewal projects for our Flexible Benefit clients as well as managing a small team of flex administrators who provided the day to day running of the schemes.

I started to visit clients more and get involved in new business presentations and really enjoyed working with different clients, understanding their needs and coming up with solutions for them. In 2007 I became a Flex Consultant, working with and running a number of client accounts and designing flexible benefit schemes and renewals.

In 2009 JLT developed BenPal as our own market leading technology solution. The initial build was focussed on Group Personal Pensions (GPPs) online and so I opted to study for the Certificate in Financial Planning and become more involved in pensions as well as Flex.

In 2010 I was promoted to an Account Director within the BenPal team. I was responsible for a portfolio of clients, to whom we provided GPPs and Flexible Benefits on BenPal.  My role included the client commercials, giving presentations to employees, scheme design, client management and new business wins.

The pensions industry changed significantly in October 2012 with the introduction of Auto Enrolment (AE.) I was involved in a number of our early client wins and spent time with the development team in Bristol helping to set business requirements for our AE build on BenPal. In 2013 I was promoted to Client Director with responsibility for our Northern clients and 10 Account Directors across Manchester, Leeds and Edinburgh.

As more and more clients went on to BenPaland it became more complex, a Product Management team was set up and I am now Head of Product Design & Development and have re-located to the St Botolph Building, London. I am responsible for the strategy of the BenPal product and prioritisation of new features with the development team. My team also get involved in new business and set the pricing model for BenPal clients.

I enjoy the fast pace of working at JLT as well as the team spirit of working with like-minded people to achieve a shared goal. During my career there has been a fair amount of change and with that change has come opportunity which I have been able to benefit from and help my career progress.
