JLT's Charles Cowling runs 10 marathons in 10 days for charity

28 May 2014

Charles Cowling, Director, JLT Employee Benefits, has completed one of the world's toughest ultra-distance road running races, raising over £50,000 for the Brathay Trust, the Udaan School in Mumbai and the Company of Actuaries Charitable Trust. Charles ran 262 miles over the 10 days across the hilly Lake District, finishing The Brathay 10in10 in a total of 61 hours and 30 minutes.

Charles is Master of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries, where his principal focus is the encouragement of charitable and education activities. Last year, he led a group of actuaries on a 200 mile Coast-to-Coast walk across England, raising £45,000 for the Udaan Foundation and Kidz2gether.

This year Charles has so far raised over £50,000 (including matching sponsorship from JLT). This will go towards helping vulnerable and isolated children and young people which the Brathay Trust support in London, the Northwest, Yorkshire and Humberside, the Midlands and Cumbria. The donations will also go towards the Udaan School in Mumbai and the Company of Actuaries Charitable Trust which supports education, particularly in the area of mathematics.

Charles's blog telling the story of his painful challenge day-by-day can be seen at:

Charles Cowling, Director, JLT Employee Benefits, comments: "All the training in the world could not prepare me for the intensity of such a challenge, attempted by only 15 runners in 2014. Yet the support and encouragement that I received was overwhelming and pulled me through a number of low points when it may have been easier to quit. One of these was on day five when it felt like I was running in a washing machine with monsoon-like rain followed by a painful hailstorm!

"If you'd asked me at the beginning, I would have said that nightly ice baths would be a torture. But I grew to enjoy these as they helped to numb the many other pains and together with some excellent, extensive and painful physiotherapy allowed me to recover for the next day's marathon.

"I would particularly like to thank JLT. Not only have I received great support from my colleagues, but the Company's matching sponsorship scheme has helped me to increase significantly the amount raised, which is now over £50,000. This money will go to support the great work that the Brathay Trust and Company of Actuaries Charitable Trust do for young people in the UK."
